International Design Competition for the Sites of Jewish History in Lviv (Ukraine)

The Executive Committee of the Lviv City Council has announced the International Competition for the Sites of Jewish History in Lviv. The decision is a result of Resolution No. 1076 , dated 6 August 2010.

International Design Competition for Sites of Jewish History in Lviv includes three separate competitions for sites in the city that have important connections to the life of Jewish community before the Second World War, and to its destruction during the Nazi occupation.

1. The site between vul. Brativ Rohatyntsiv, vul. Arsenalna, vul. Staroievreiska and the vacant lot between vul. Staroievreiska 22 and vul. Arsenalska, and also the plot with the ruins of the Golden Rose Synagogue. Buildings that played an important role in the religious and cultural life of Lviv’s Jewish community stood on this territory until 1943. They were: the Great City Synagogue, the Turei Zahav Synagogue (the Golden Rose or Nachmanovych Synagogue), the Beth Hamidrash building. The competition materials are available under "Competition for the Synagogue Square Site"

2. The site located next to the building of the Lviv Municipal Maternity Hospital on Rappaport street, 8 (the former Jewish hospital). It is defined on the north by the fence of Krakivsky market, on the south by the building of the hospital and Rappaport Street, and on the east by the buildings on vul. Bazarna street. The plot is a green area directly connected with an internal courtyard of the Lviv Municipal Maternity Hospital. The site is part of historic Jewish cemetery which was laid to waste during the Holocaust. The competition materials for this site are available under "Competition for the Besojlem Memorial Park Site"

3. The site where mass killings took place, and where in 1943 Jewish inmates were forced to destroy the evidence of Nazi crimes. It is located to the north of where the camp barracks used to be. The area was known as the Valley of Death (Dolyna smerti). The site is part of the Kortumov Hill nature reserve along Vynnytsia Street in a northeastern suburb of Lviv. The competition materials for this site are under "Competition for the Yanivsky Camp Memorial Site"

All these sites are closely related to the history of the Jewish community in Lviv, and competitors can submit proposals for each or all of three sites. Entries are to be judged separately for each site, and are to be awarded individually for each site (see the competition briefs).

Competitors who enter more than one site are asked to submit their entries separately (but they can be sent in one package).

The submission deadline is December 7, 2010 18:00 (EET)

Further detailes of dates can be found under competition schedules for each site:

All competition materials (maps, schemes, photographs, historical resources) can be downloaded at http://www.city-adm.lviv.ua/archilviv in the section “Files Archive” and “Photogallery.”  A map showing the three locations is now available here.

Competition briefs in PDF with descriptions, requirements, and project essence for each three sites are available in Files Archive:
